A brief history of leather

Updated: Apr 2

Leatherworking has a rich history that spans over 400,000 years, with some of the oldest preserved artifacts dating back to around 3500 BC during the Stone Age. This ancient craft, one of humanity's earliest, has fulfilled numerous roles, from creating clothing to building shelters. Clearly, leatherworking is an important part of our human story and is deeply embedded in our cultural legacy.

Unfortunately, this traditional craft faces significant challenges due to the rise of fast fashion and the widespread use of modern mass production methods by large companies. The leather goods produced today often use inferior materials, and the machinery involved cannot replicate the time-honoured

techniques that ensure the longevity of the products.

When you choose to buy a handcrafted leather item, made with care by someone who has dedicated years to mastering their craft, you are not just making a purchase for the future; you are also honouring the past.
